A new experiment gets underway
Earlier this year researchers from the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) in Greece began one of the first experimental activities within SelectOrganic, focusing on gilthead seabream. The team is exploring whether introducing younger males during the spawning season can encourage a more balanced parental contribution, ultimately maintaining the genetic diversity of future generations.
Why does this matter?
Maintaining genetic diversity is essential for maintaining long term selection response and developing healthy and resilient fish populations.By increasing the number of families represented in each egg batch, breeding programmes can improve long-term adaptability while supporting the goals of sustainable organic aquaculture.
