In this framework, I was involved in mainly applied research aiming at the optimization of broodstock management methods, focusing on marine fishes. My research gave me the opportunity to be in close contact with the aquaculture industry, and to study more than twenty different cultured fish species. More recently, my research focuses on the study of large benthic and pelagic fishes such as the wreckfish (Polyprion americanus), greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) and the Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), species which we succeeded in controlling their reproduction in captivity. These successes have opened a new chapter in the potential of marine aquaculture, not only in Greece and Europe, but world wide, since all three species are cosmopolitan in distribution and highly demanded in the seafood markets. |

Besides biotechnological applications, I am interested in the study of key biomolecules (metabolites, metabolism-regulating compounds and proteins) that may play a central role in the physiological functions of marine organisms or provide important information about the identity (e.g. chemotaxonomy), the properties (e.g. bioactivity, biotoxicity), the inherent biological characteristics (e.g. gender, maturity) or the disorders (e.g. stress) of marine organisms. |

She has extensive hands-on experience in feed formulation, extrusion processing, and fish rearing trials, as well as in the chemical and biochemical characterization of feeds and fish tissues using advanced analytical techniques. Her PhD research focused on the nutritional physiology and feeding of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), investigating the use of biotechnologically processed forage legumes (e.g., white lupin) through solid-state fermentation and enzymatic hydrolysis as sustainable protein sources in aquafeeds. She has actively contributed to multiple EU, national, and industry-funded projects addressing the integration of plant-based and novel ingredients in aquaculture diets, assessing their effects on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and overall fish health. My work mostly focuses on: a) the study of fish reproductive biology and endocrinology, b) the monitoring of reproductive dysfunctions observed in male and female fish under captivity and c) the control of reproduction and induction of maturation in species of interest for aquaculture. Recently, our scope was to study large, benthic or pelagic species, such as the wreckfish (Polyprion americanus), the greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili), the bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) and the meagre (Argyrosomus regius). My responsibilities involve fish maintenance and handling, egg collection and egg quality evaluation, fish feeding, water quality measurements, samplings for blood and tissues, hormonal treatments, sperm quality evaluation and histological processing of samples. My duties also involve student training. In the future I plan to continue working on fish reproductive biology, problems faced under captivity and methods to improve broodstock management in both cultured and new species. | |||||
