In this framework, I was involved in mainly applied research aiming at the optimization of broodstock management methods, focusing on marine fishes. My research gave me the opportunity to be in close contact with the aquaculture industry, and to study more than twenty different cultured fish species. More recently, my research focuses on the study of large benthic and pelagic fishes such as the wreckfish (Polyprion americanus), greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) and the Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), species which we succeeded in controlling their reproduction in captivity. These successes have opened a new chapter in the potential of marine aquaculture, not only in Greece and Europe, but world wide, since all three species are cosmopolitan in distribution and highly demanded in the seafood markets. |

My research focus on identification/selection of ideal biomarkers and development/optimization/validation of bioassays to detect anthropogenic environmental impacts on aquatic organisms and to evaluate the status of development, health and survival of marine farmed fish and shellfish affected by rearing systems, nutritional manipulations, disease treatments and exposure to other stressors during production. I have been involved in many EU and National research projects related to my research interests. I have established the Ecotoxicology Lab for Biological markers and assays at the Institute of Oceanography of HCMR and the Toxicology and Biomarkers Lab at the IMBBC of HCMR, where I am the Scientific responsible. I have been evaluator for the establishment of International Standardized guidelines for toxicity bioassays (ISO) by the Hellenic Organization Standardization (ELOT) and initiator for the production of National legislation (FEK 455/4-4-2000) for licensing chemical dispersants to combat oil pollution in seawaters based on toxicity bioassays. | ||||

She has participated in many EU and national projects studying the effect of nutrition (insects, immunostimulants, probiotics, minerals, fishmeal and fish oil replacement...), stress or pollution on the fish immune system and on the fish resistance to diseases. She also has studied the effects of diseases commonly affecting Mediterranean aquaculture fish species on their immune system. Recently, our scope was to study large, benthic or pelagic species, such as the wreckfish (Polyprion americanus), the greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili), the bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) and the meagre (Argyrosomus regius). My responsibilities involve fish maintenance and handling, egg collection and egg quality evaluation, fish feeding, water quality measurements, samplings for blood and tissues, hormonal treatments, sperm quality evaluation and histological processing of samples. My duties also involve student training. In the future I plan to continue working on fish reproductive biology, problems faced under captivity and methods to improve broodstock management in both cultured and new species. | |||||

In addition, she has a long-standing experience in fish feed production, biochemical analytical techniques for fish feeds and fish tissues (total nitrogen - Kjeldahl procedure; total fats - Soxhlet procedure; fibrous substances, carbohydrates, total minerals – ash content, use of biochemical analyzers for blood and serum and amino acids. She is trained for accreditation of laboratories according to the revised ISO 17025:2017 standard of the Hellenic Chemical Society and qualifies as a certified analyst in the Laboratory of Nutrition and Pathology of HCMR which is an Accredited Laboratory of the National Laboratory Accreditation System (ESYD) in accredited chemical tests of this laboratory according to the international standard ISO / IEC 170. She has expertise on molecular biology (DNA barcoding and metabarcoding). She has worked in European projects on alien species, DNA barcoding of various macroinvertebrates and identification of species found aggregating in ship hauls.
