The 2nd Summer School of NAUTILOS
NAUTILOS (www.nautilos-h2020.eu) is a Horizon 2020 project aiming to develop a new generation of cost-effective sensors and samplers, to integrate observation technologies and platforms into large-scale demonstrations across European seas and to make a significant contribution towards the democratisation of marine environment monitoring. The project is implemented by a large consortium of 21 partners coming from 11 European countries and it is coordinated by the Nаtionаl Reseаrch Council (CNR) of Itаly.
Part of the NAUTILOS activities is the organization of two Capacity Building Learning Labs aiming to improve the professional skills and competences of early career scientists, marine specialists and experts working or being trained to work within the blue economy and marine litter combat. The 2nd NAUTILOS Summer School was organized by Dr Eva Chatzinikolaou (Research Fellow, IMBBC/HCMR) in Heraklion, Crete during 17-19 of April 2024, where a total of 10 students and more than 20 trainers participated. The course included lectures, discussions and interpretation of marine data covering the latest developments on marine litter including international treaties, measuring technologies and sensors, as well as methodologies for citizen science. In addition, the course included hands-on training on several newly developed sensors and measuring systems developed within the NAUTILOS project, which took place during a practical demonstration organized on the beach and during a second one organized on board HCMR’s scientific vessel PHILIA. The students enjoyed a unique opportunity to experience the real conditions of a marine scientist working life.
