A pilot-scale facility for larval rearing is operated at the Institute including a plankton production unit.
Our Mesocosm hatchery, applying semi-intensive methods, includes 6×40 m3 tanks, while the Intensive hatchery operates with closed water systems, having 8 sets of 2×0.5 m3 tanks and 3 sets of 3×2 m3 tanks. Feeding is performed using an automated system developed in-house. A pre-growing section is also available with 18×10 m3 tanks.
This facility is used to develop species-specific hatchery methodologies, establishing the feeding requirements and optimal environmental parameters for the larvae (light, temperature, tank hydrodynamics). The effects of the larval rearing conditions on the subsequent performance of the fish represent a major objective of the hatchery operations.
