Use of insect protein and phytoplankton oil to replace fishmeal and fish oil in the diets of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)

The aim of the proposed research is to examine the possibility of mass production of insect and micro-algae species for future industrial exploitation and to explore the possibility of partial replacement of fishmeal and fish oil in sea bream and sea bass diets.

A total number of 3 research bodies comprised of staff from 6 research laboratories will collaborate to the project, which will be implemented in 5 work packages including the creation of protocols for the mass production of insects and micro-algae, the evaluation of their nutritional composition and the conduct of a series of dietary experiments with sea bream and seabass to assess the use of these raw materials in growth, feed utilization, health, nutritional value and organoleptic characteristics of fish.
