I am a senior researcher at the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. My main research topic is the study and control of diseases in aquaculture. I have dealt with almost the entire range of diseases affecting fish, infectious and non-infectious. The main objectives of my research are the pathologies affecting novel aquaculture fish species and the new emerging diseases. In recent years I have emphasized on the understanding of the molecular mechanisms that determine the virulence of pathogenic microorganisms and their interaction with the fish. In the field of disease control, I have worked extensively with the use of bacteriophages as a means of prevention and treatment and with the development of autogenous vaccines that has recently evolved to an independent service activity to the Greek aquaculture industry.
I am the founder of Aquatic Biologicals, the first spinoff company of HCMR. Aquatic Biologicals is a Marine Biotechnology company with focus on the development of aquaculture health products like autogenous vaccines and phage therapy products.
