evolution of reproductive mode, fungi, symbiosis, bioremediation, transposable elements, multi-omic data integration, metagenomics
Researcher in Microbial Bioinformatics, with ~10 years post-doctoral experience in the UK, Sweden, USA, and Greece. Initially trained in Biology (NKUA), I obtained a Masters and a PhD in Genomics (University Paris-Sud) and switched into bioinformatics following a specialized course (Institut Pasteur Paris). In my research so far, I have investigated pathogenicity, symbiosis, and genome evolution in fungi and bacteria, using a range of data technologies and types (-omic, meta-, text). I have additionally worked in publishing as Scientific Editor, and as an Assistant Professor in Bioinformatics (American Farm School).
At HCMR, I am conducting research on marine fungi, which represent an untapped source of chemical and taxonomic diversity. Combining access to emerging -global and local- fungal collections, and high-performance computing facilities, we generate annotated genomes and transcriptomes of isolates from diverse habitats. I use these data to study symbiosis (with corals, sponges, ascidians), adaptation to marine environments and reproductive mode from an evolutionary and functional genomics perspective. Areas of ongoing research include characterization of fungal enzymatic potential (CMBR project), with applications to bioremediation (collaboration with NTUA).
