Thanos Dailianis

His research focuses on the biology of marine invertebrates through an integrative approach comprising field ecology, taxonomy, genetic diversity, physiology and biotechnological applications. This is combined with a general interest in marine biodiversity and conservation.

Currently coordinator of MACCIMO project, attempting a multi-level assessment of climate change impact on sessile and low-motility marine invertebrates. Principal investigator for SponBIODIV Biodiversa+, aspiring to address knowledge gaps in sponge diversity patterns and habitat status in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. PI for SPINAQUA, investigating the potential of sponge cultivation in proximity to fish aquaculture for bioremediation and bioproduction.

Member of the management committee of three ongoing European COST actions: MAF-World, on the research and conservation of Marine Animal Forests; Ocean4Biotech, on the development of marine biotechnology research, and SEA-Unicorn, unifying approaches to marine connectivity for resource management.

An avid technical diver, with over 1000 logged dives for research in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea and coordinator of scientific expeditions. Expert in underwater photography, for scientific documentation and dissemination.
