Participation of IMBBC-HCMR in the 10th International EuroGOOSConference, 3-5 October 2023, Galway, Ireland

Two oral presentations from the EU project MARine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning leading to Ecosystem Services (MARBEFES) were given in the conference of the European Global Ocean Observing System (EuroGOOS) by DrYolanda Koulouri of IMBBC.  They were related to “Stakeholder Engagement in Heraklion Gulf, Crete, Greece” and a “Comprehensive approach to understanding reasons and sharing knowledge on biodiversity changes in European seas.

 

The 10th International EuroGOOS Conference brought together over 160 in-person participants and covered all aspects of operational oceanography and its societal relevance. Four high-level plenary sessions were dedicated to the UN Ocean Decade, Digital Twin Ocean, European Ocean Observing System (EOOS), and Future Look for Operational Oceanography. In addition, the Conference participants discussed over 80 presentations and 20 posters on all areas of oceanography.

The EuroGOOS Ocean Literacy (OL) Working Group was promoted by its members in addition to a session co-designed by its co-chairs, Angela Pomaro (CNR) and Yolanda Koulouri, a social event at the Galway Atlantaquaria, and a plenary talk highlighting the OL session outcomes. The next 11th International EuroGOOSConference will be organized by the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) in Larnaka, Cyprus

The IMBBC is one of the three institutes of the HCMR, with headquarters in Heraklion, Crete and facilities in Anavyssos, Attica and Souda, Crete. With a staff of 111 people and 24 regular researchers, it undertakes research in marine biodiversity, genetics and genomics, and aquaculture.
