Dr. Sterioti is a senior researcher at the Institute Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture Institute of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research. Her research interests are focused on the study of marine organisms with economical and/or ecological interest for the aquaculture and marine aquarium.
Dr. Sterioti's research field may be summarized in (a) the collection and identification of marine fish larvae/fry, (b) the marine hatchery techniques mainly Extensive (Mesocosm), Semi-extensive (Mesocosm) and Intensive larval rearing, the study of fish stage development, the Food chains and Life food production, (c) the coloration of marine fish, the histological studies (skin structure) by both light and electron microscopy, the morphology and physiology of skin chromatophores (pigment cells).
Her research field also includes (d) the alive stock handling and study of Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific tropical fish and invertebrates, including the jellyfish and seahorse to the elasmobranch (sharks Carcharias taurus, Carcharhinus plumbeus, rays, skates) and allochthonus Lessepsian species, the water quality amelioration, and, finally, (e) the protection of wild life, injured marine turtles' care and rehabilitation, the conservation and reproduction of endangered species.
