Despoina is a chemical engineer from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) with an expertise in the field of Biotechnology and Food Engineering. She is currently a PhD candidate at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of Technical University of Crete (TUC). She performs her PhD thesis at the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture in Crete in the context of the multidisciplinary research project "SPINAQUA". Her main research interests focus on the remediation of aquaculture systems using sponges, as well as the biotechnological valorization of their biomass. Previously, she has been involved in projects related to the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass towards the production of high added-value products by marine microalgae and bacteria.
